Variations and options of teambuilding processes
Teambuilding comes in many variations and options that can be included in a teambuilding initiative depending on the desired outcome, the team’s current situation and context.
Exercises to get to know each other
Activities where the participants learn about each other, either in a more casual-active process (games, team exercises, etc), more business-like workshop (mutual exchange of experiences and ideas to work topics, marketplaces or exhibitions using the Moderation-Method) or through personal diagnostic tools that provide an improved understanding of different personal behavioural preferences at work (e.g. Team Management Profile (TMP), MBTI, DISC, Belbin’s team roles).
Experiential learning of collaborative behaviour
Activities that provide an opportunity to experience and explore principles of successful collaboration in teams, e.g. by achieving an outcome that can only be achieved by working well together as a team. These exercises can include outdoor and indoor activities and tasks (low or more risk, physical or cerebral, on-site/off-site). All experiences are structurally debriefed using the Moderation-Method and the experiential learning cycle (based on Kolb’s theory) to maximise the transfer of the learning conclusions into workplace applications).
Cross-cultural team building
Activities and forums that provide an understanding of the different cultures in a team or organisation and promote the mutual acceptance and better use of cultural diversity. Practical examples are the new composition of multicultural project teams, the cross-cultural work in an international organisation or in an international corporation with a foreign lead culture and various local cultures etc.
Planning forums and teambuilding
All of the above can be combined in “away-days” where teams, sections, units or departments not only explore team work and get to know each other better. Involve International has also run many occasions where teams were using the opportunity “to work on the business” (compared to daily “work in the business”). This can include analysing the current situation in various categories (working together, work processes, leadership, innovation, social, quality, environment, safety, SWOT), identifying areas and ideas for improvement and planning the business for the next period of time.
All teambuilding activities can be designed and delivered in various formats starting from half-day on-site workshops, residential off-site days in a non-distracting environment to a series of events over a longer period of time.
